As an expert interpreter appointed by the Court of Appeal in Aix-en-Provence, I can also meet needs for interpreting with the judicial or administrative authorities or assist clients when they sign official documents at law firms or notarial offices (marriage contracts, deeds of sale, etc.).

All about Interpretation

I have been a legal interpreter in southeastern France for over 28 years, providing mostly liaison interpreting services, but there are other forms of interpreting too:

Consecutive

Consecutive interpreting: the interpreter takes notes while the speaker delivers a part of their speech. The speaker then pauses and the interpreter delivers it in another language. The interpreter only translates one-way, i.e. for the audience. This is the preferred method for official speeches.

Liaison

Liaison interpreting: this is a two-way process in which the interpreter translates discussions as people communicate. Being particularly suited to police questioning or court hearings, this method can require certain mediation skills, but it is also perfectly adapted to meetings and visits.

Simultaneous

Simultaneous interpreting: unlike consecutive interpreting, the interpreter is generally in a booth and translates the speaker’s text in real time, fluently and continuously. This method is used particularly at conferences and large meetings.

When do you need a professional interpreter?

If you have an appointment with a judicial or administrative authority or need to sign official documents (marriage contract, power of attorney, deed of sale), I can provide professional legal interpreting services in southeastern France, from Nice to Marseille, in English and Spanish.

A successful interpreting assignment in four key steps:

  1. When a client contacts me for an interpreting assignment, I need to know all the details, namely the date, time and place, the relevant language, the content and area of expertise, and the type of interpreting method required.
  2. After assessing the assignment, I submit a quote to the client.
  3. Once the quote has been approved, I prepare for the interpreting assignment. This particularly involves studying the documentation and work materials provided and researching the topics to be covered. There is no room for improvisation when it comes to conferences. However, I also interpret in court and for the police, often at very short notice.
  4. I attend the meeting at the agreed time and place. Since the Covid pandemic, liaison interpreting sometimes takes place by telephone or video-conferencing. In this case, I work online from my office, using the necessary equipment.
